The Passing Of a Legend: Michael Jackson

Mention the name of the late King of Pop,anyone, from young to the very old,are familiar, even appeal,to the legend. This is because a lot of us grew up listening to his musics, how his music reflect our own lives,he'll always be the one reminding us.Although most of Michael Jackson's contribution revolves around his music and the way he presented his video clips into a form of visual art, there's something about him that I copied off:his fashion sense.

These are the essential clothings of MJ that a lot of designers had been inspired,or even copied, off:

  • Fedora
  • Leather/sequin jacket
  • Cropped pants
  • Tie-up shoes with white socks
  • Gloves
May God bless your soul forever, dear MJ.Rest in Peace. We'll love you forever.

Recessionista 101

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping! This is so true!No 'thanks' to the current economy blunder .How did it start? It all started in the US,where people were spending more money than they were earning, which forced them to buy things on credit. And because of this, personal debt skyrocketed from about 30% of a person's income to 160%,over 10-12 years.

HOW WILL IT AFFECT US
It may be hard to find a job with the job market becoming strained and employers cutting costs, and some risks losing their jobs because the employers cannot afford to pay the wages, and the retailers will start dropping their prices to attract more buyers.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
  • SPEND MORE!-It might seem inapropriate but apparently the saying 'money makes the world go round' has more than a little truth to it.By continuing to spend your money, you'll be helping the Malaysian economy to grow.
  • SAVE MORE!-Confusing as it seems, after you've spent your money,it's important to keep on saving as well. This is so if the unexpected happens, like job losses,or trouble getting a job,the money you saved earlier on could be count as backup.
THINGS TO TRY
  • Get a pre-paid instead of the usual bills.
  • Make a budget and list every purchase made.
  • Prioritise and decide what things are really important at the moment.
  • Shop at flea markets or shops that allow bargaining!
  • Decrease journey,unless neccesary.
  • Carpool to save money on petrol(and also help the environment).
Happy saving,smarties!

Shopaholic:Novel VS Movie

I must say that I'm rather dissappointed after watching the Shopaholic movie. It was altered a lot from the original plot from the novel itself,in a very obvious way.The fact that it was so damn Americanized really upsets me as a true fan of the novel(waaay back in 2004).How come Becky and the Bloomwood clans be turned into a bunch of yankees?

Anyway, props to Patricia Field for being the saving grace of the movie.I'm really impressed with her work in the movie,a fashionably job well-done!I don't really despise this movie,it's still fun and entertaining to watch, but for those die-hard-fans of the novel,STAY CLEAR of the movie! You might burn the cinema down.

GroOvy Granny PATRICIA FIELD

Have you seen any of these movies/shows that has an eclectic and quirky mix of wardrobe/props?
  • The Devil Wears Prada
  • Hope&Faith
  • Ugly Betty
  • Sex&The City
  • Confessions Of A Shopaholic
If you answer YES to any of the above, chances are you might've fallen in love with the style coordination of the clothes worn by the characters. The stylist responsible behind all this madness is none other than the legendary American fashion icon herself,Patricia Field.

Stylista wannabes,take note.Patricia Field said that "I observed the way(a character)moved,talked,and dressed."
During a recent interview when promoting the movie Shopaholic,Field was quoted as saying "French women are very complete in their dressing, they have their gloves, hats, belts, which I absolutely adored".She also noted that American dressing tends to be casual and practical "Everyone dresses the same.T-shirts,V-necks,jeans.They're all the same type of articles. So,it's how you accessorise and how you put it together that sets you apart",she quipped.

A rather stylish tips indeed,Patricia Field!

The Bane of Fashion and Beauty(part 1)

Fashion and beauty are inseparable. We will do anything to achieve that certain look that we crave for. Some will put themselves on debt with overspending, some will go under the knife, and the rest starves themselves to death. But believe me,a lot of us are like that. And sadly, some even got hurt, sick,or worse, died because of these things just to make a fashion statement:

  • Chunky high-heels-Will hurt knees and spinal curvature, damaged calf muscles, enlarged joints, damage to sole and arches, gives you corns, bunions, and deformed toes.
  • Mini skirts- Minimal protection, maximum risks such as causing a cellulite. This happens when the mini skirt worn during cold temperature are likely to grow a thicker layer of fat and cellulite on the legs to keep warm.
  • Pantyhose- Prevents air from circulating around the foot, creates a damp and warm environment for growth of fungi, the abrasiveness of nylon can cause blisters.
  • Thongs- Can carry bacteria from the rectum toward the vagina, leading to bladder and vaginal infections, and also urinary tract infections.

FAKE OFF!!! (part 2)

*Stalls in Petaling Street*

Anyone who's normal enough will admit that fake goods are still illegal no matter what the excuses to buy them can be.We should face the truth that beyond all that glamorous looking goods that makes us look stylish,is a dark, painful story yet to be told.......

IT'S A CRIME,PEEPS
Next time you're lingering over a fake, think about the criminal whose wallet you're about to line. There are proven LINKS between money made from the trade and organised crime:
  • After the 1993 attempted bombing of the WTC,the FBI found evidence that the terrorists had funded themselves by the sale of counterfeit T-shirts.
  • Al-Qaeda training manuals advise new recruits to fund themselves by making fakes.
  • Every person who buys an imitation could be helping launder money for criminal gangs.

CHILD SLAVE LABOUR
Nearly all fake bags are made in illegal factories in China, often BY children. The kids work up to 15 hours a day!Often in filthy factories, for a pittance. They grow up with HEALTH problems,NO education and no real skills. They're FIRED when they turn 16 because the factory employs younger kids for less, and then they have no skills to get a real job.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU'RE BUYING A FAKE
  • You're ripping yourself off.The government can't collect tax on it so it's ultimately poorer. You're also not supporting real Malaysian employees of that company.
  • It's going to fall apart. The reason the real products are so expensive is due to the workmanship put into the creation.

FAKE OFF!!! (part 1)

Ahhh, designer brands. At the mere thought of it,we immediately wandered off to dreamland, wishing and hoping to at least own even just an item of the luxury goods.Unfortunately not all of us were born with a silver spoon in the gob(British for 'mouth').Who wouldn't want to be envied by other fashionistas by simply owning the latest It-bag/shoes/etc?So to keep up with the fashionable peeps,a lot of us resort to this solution:BUY FAKE DESIGNER.But is it really worth it?

Though some of us would go the extra mile and spend a gazillion of money, some beg to differ.I mean why on earth would we want to waste a thousands of ringgit just for a bloody purse/bag/etc right? But I'm not going to be bias about this issue. For those who can afford luxury stuff,God bless you.But for those who can't,fret not as I have a few facts, sourced straight from the expert,on how to buy a decently made fakes, and how to spot whether an item is real or fake:

LOOK OUT FOR:
  • Symmetry-The most obvious difference between the real and the fake is that real designer handbags are symmetrical. If the print is cut off at 2 different points on either side of the bag, walk on.You should be able to draw an invisible line down the middle and see a mirror reflection of the print on both sides.
  • In The Cut-Make sure the logo of the designer who 'inspired' the bag is intact. There is no way Louis would left a bag onto his shelf for sale if his initials were sliced in two.
  • A Stitch in Time- The stitching should be perfect.Make sure the stitches are an even distance from the seam and that the fabric is not puckered. If it looks dodgy, forget it.
  • Seal Of Approval-Designer bags have a stamp on them that signifies where they were made. The lusted after Hermes Kelly bags have a Hermes Paris stamp, while Louis Vuitton should have a branded stamp that reads Louis Vuitton Paris,Made in France.A smudged stamp is an indication that your bag is fake.LV bags have the stamp on the inside.
So,think it all through.I'm not suggesting anything, only a shared facts that any fashionista must know.Fake items are seriously not recommended. Why?Read part 2.
